International festival of Adyghe culture starts in Maykop

ADYGEYA, October 1, Caucasus Times, – Yesterday, the 3rd festival of Adyghe culture was opened in Maykop with spectacular show of the Adyghe participants from the republic, southern Russia’s provinces and abroad where the ethnic Adyghes live marching down the city streets. Professional and amateur folk dance and song groups and individuals from Krasnodar Territory, Kabardino-Balkariya, Karachai-Cherkessia, North Ossetia-Alania, as well as from Turkey and Jordan will be featuring their performances at the concerts. A few visitors from Israel, USA and Germany came to attend the festivities, a little less than last year.

At the opening of the festival the Adughe guests from abroad have laid flowers at the memorial of victims of the Russo-Caucasian war in l9 century. In the afternoon President Sovemen of Adygeya had a meeting with representatives of Adyghe diaspora. Local media were not allowed at the meeting.

Since 2003 the festival has become an annual event in the republic as the Adyghe diaspora had requested President Hazret Sovemen. This year Mr. Sovement a cosponsor of the festival has contributed over $20.000 of his own presidential fund.
