Former district head sentenced to eight years in Dagestan
DAGESTAN, 3 August, Caucasus Times – The head of a Dagestani district has been sentenced to eight years in prison for bribery.
The Dagestani Supreme Court issued a verdict on the former head of administration of Dagestan’s Nogayskiy District, Asan Mamayev, who was charged with taking a bribe of R600,000 [21,500 dollars] … Judge Rasul Magomedov … sentenced Mamayev to eight years’ imprisonment in a strict regime colony and fined him R100,000 [3,732 dollars]”.
Mamayev pleaded himself not guilty. He and his lawyer Yakub Vagidov said
during the trial that the arrest was a provocation.
On 8 April 2006 Mamayev was caught red-handed by law enforcers while receiving money from Dagestan’s Kizlyarskiy District resident Mukhtar Aliyev who wanted to rent a plot of land to be involved in cattle breeding.
