Cold-blood murder of deputy Interior minister

DAGESTAN, February 2, Caucasus Times – Yesterday, Mohammed Omarov, the Interior Minister of Dagestan was assassinated in Mahachkala, Caucasus Times correspondent reports citing the Interior Ministry press service.
The assassination attempt on the official’s life occurred at 8.35 p.m. on the crossroad of Yaragsky and Lenin Streets. The deputy minister’s car was blocked by two taxies and the killers sprayed the car with assault rifles fire at close range. Mr. Omarov and his guards, three police officers Mahomedov, Vagidov, Ahmedov, died at the spot. The fourth officer Mohamed Mohamedov, is reported survived, still remains in hospital in grave condition.

Later the cars were found blazed in Batyraya and Pirogova streets. The police patrol found in the cars Kalashnikov assault rifles, a hand grenade, cartridges and military camouflage.

This came to be the third attempt on the official’s life. Gen. Mohammed Omarov has been an outstanding political figure in the republic, and known as “the national general” among the locals. In the last attempt on Mr. Omarov’s life, in May, 2003, killers used a roadside bomb but the general narrowly escaped in the attack.
