Authorities in southern Russia deny attack on local leader

INGUSHETIYA, 25 July, Caucasus Times: “Yesterday, some media outlets quoted the independent online portal Ingushetiya.ru as saying that a convoy of vehicles carrying the president of the Republic of Ingushetia, Murat Zyazikov, came under fire in Magas on 21 July. The press service of the Ingush Interior Ministry states that there has been no such incident and this is a fabrication by those who are trying to destabilize the situation in the republic. We ask the editorial board of Ingushetiya.ru and other media outlets not to circulate unverified information in the future,” says the report by the press service.

We should recall that the Ingushetiya.ru website had reported that unknown people fired at the motorcade of Ingush President Murat Zyazikov at about 1800 [1400 gmt] last Saturday [21 July]. The vehicles came under fire from automatic weapons and grenade launchers. As a result of the attack, the vehicles were damaged but there were no casualties. The convoy managed to get out of the firing line at a high speed.
