Russian ministry says head of rebel group killed in Chechen town

Chechnya, 21 March, Caucasus Times: Tasir Batayev, amir of the Sary-Su bandit formation from the so-called “Nogay battalion”, has been killed in Gudermes, the joint press centre of the operational headquarters of the Russian Interior Ministry told Caucasus Times.

This bandit formation is responsible for many crimes committed in the settlements of Kargalinskaya, Sary-Su and Borozdinovskaya in Chechnya’s Shelkovskoy District as well as in Stavropol Territory’s Neftekumskiy District.

Batayev had a pistol on him and while being arrested in the vicinity of the central market he offered resistance and was killed with retaliatory fire. An arms cache was found in the house in which he lived. The cache contained an assault rifle, a lot of cartridges, “Khattabki” grenades, parts of a radio station and the black flag of the bandit formation.

Tasir Batayev was in the federal wanted list in connection with several articles of the Russian Criminal Code: 105 (murder), 126 (abduction), 208 (taking part in illegal armed formations) and 209 (banditry).
