Rebel detained in Dagestan

DAGESTAN, 19 September, Caucasus Times – A member of an illegal armed formation has been detained in the village of Tsoloda in Dagestan’s Khasavyurtovskiy District on suspicion of attacking the republic as part of the gang led by [killed Chechen field commander] Shamil Basayev in August 1999, the republic’s law-enforcement agencies have reported.

During a search, a large number of books, audio and video tapes promoting Wahhabism were found in his house.

An investigation is under way to find out whether the detainee was involved in other crimes committed on the territory of Dagestan and Chechnya.

In addition, a resident of the village of Novolakskoye in Dagestan’s Novolakskiy District has voluntarily surrendered two home-made revolvers, two hand grenades, 240 cartridges for an automatic gun and 16 rounds for a Kalashnikov rifle-attached grenade launcher.
