Picket held in southern Russia against Sochi Olympics

Adygeya, 5 July, Caucasus Times: A picket was held in Adygeya’s capital Maykop on 5 July against the holding of the Olympic Games in Sochi.

With their slogans: “No to the mendacious Olympic propaganda!”, “The woods to the oligarchs, and tree stumps to descendants?” and “No to the privatization of the woods!”, public organizations and parties, including the Union of Slavs of Adygeya, the republican branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and others, expressed their discontent with the
decision of the International Olympic Committee [to make Sochi host of the 2014 Olympics] which came despite the fact that public environmental organizations had for a long time been reporting to the International Olympic Committee serious environmental threats that the holding of the Olympic Games in Sochi carries.

The chairman of one of those organizations – the Maykop city public organization of the All-Russian Society for Nature Protection, Valeriy Brinnikh, noted in this connection that the actual aim behind the holding the Olympics in Sochi is to capture valuable territories of the Sochi
national park.

It is unacceptable to put forward Sochi – the country’s most southern city – in a bid for winter Olympic games in Russia, where there are vast northern territories fit for use for any winter sports, he believes.
