New military compound commissioned in Russia’s Kabarda-Balkaria

Kabarda-Balkaria, 19 February, Caucasus Times – A modern military compund has been commissioned in Kabarda-Balkaria’s Prokhladnyy, The Caucasus Times website reported on 19 February.

The website quoted Kabarda-Balkar President Arsen Kanokov as saying that the building of the military compund “is a factor of stability” for the republic.

The compound with the hotel-type barracks has been designed for 1,800 contract servicemen and its construction cost 31m dollars.

The website also quoted the commander of the North Caucasus Military District, Aleksandr Baranov, as saying that 44,000 troops, or 70 per cent of the military personnel in the North Caucasus would be transferred to contract-based service by late 2007.
