Fishermen gone missing in Dagestan

DAGESTAN, December 6, Caucasus Times – Several local men of the village of Aguzer in Kizlyar district were reported missing since they had gone fishing in the Caspian Sea, the Emergency Situation Ministry told Caucasus Times correspondent.

The fishermen’s relatives concerned about their long absence applied for assistance to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Dagestan. The fishermen’s half-sunk boat was spotted in the Kazakhstan waters, approximately 350 kms (217 mi.) off the Dagestan shores. The rescue workers did not find any traces of the fishermen. The Ministry said the people might have been carried away far into the sea by the storm and got lost without a compass.

Though the hope that any of the fishermen could survive fades, the rescue operation is still under way. The information on the missing people has been sent to marine services of Kazakhstan and Iran.
