DAGESTAN, December 2, Caucasus Times – Yesterday, at 11.55 p. m Ahmed Batalov, deputy mayor of the city of Makhachkala was assassinated, Caucasus Times correspondent reports citing the regional Interior Ministry. Mr. Batalov was killed at the moment he driving up to his house in Kazbekova street. A killer opened fire at the official’s car at short range. Mr. Batalov suffered several gunshot wounds and died soon while being transported to hospital. Investigators collecting evidences at the site found nine 7,62 caliber cases of Kalashnikov assault rifle. The police supposed the killer used a rifle with silencer.
The republic’s Prosecutor’s Office has instituted a criminal case. The investigators are considering several versions of the crime. The assassination of Mr. Batalov, according to one of them, might be linked with the official’s job, the police said, as he had managed in the municipal administration finances and economics spheres of the city.
Over the last three years, this has been the second assassination of an official in municipal administration. In 2001 another deputy mayor Ahmed Aliyev was killed in his house. Prosecutor’s office also considers a possible linkage of the attempt on Mr. Batalov’s life with recent assassination of his son. Late year Kazbek Batalov, inspector of the city department of Interior Ministry, was gunned down in his own car.
